Al Ahly’s new coach Thorup proud to join club, eyes trophies

Al Ahly’s newly appointed head coach Jess Thorup expressed pride in taking charge of the Egyptian giants, vowing to pursue titles and continue the club’s tradition of success.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the club’s headquarters, the Danish manager said he is eager to begin his tenure with the record African champions.

“I’m extremely happy to be here. Many of the club’s officials are former footballers. I had a productive conversation with club president Mahmoud El Khatib - we were both strikers in our playing days, and we discussed several important matters concerning the team,” Thorup said.

The 55-year-old said he was already familiar with the club’s winning mentality and embraces its high expectations.

“I’ve learned a lot about Al Ahly. I know this is a club that always plays to win, and I fully identify with that approach. I will do everything I can to develop the players, protect the club’s legacy, and build on its long history of success.”

Thorup added that he is eager to work with the squad and is aware of the immediate challenges ahead, including an upcoming match in a matter of days. The former FC Midtjylland and Genk boss will be supported by a five-member backroom staff.

“Our sole objective is to win and secure titles, that’s the essence of football,” he said. “I’m used to working with top European clubs, I’ve coached in the Champions League, and I know that leading Al Ahly won’t be easy. But I’m comfortable working under pressure.”

Thorup said he has already reviewed several of Al Ahly’s recent matches, including their FIFA Club World Cup appearances and domestic league performances, to assess the team’s strengths and areas for improvement.

“Al Ahly played three matches in the Club World Cup and delivered strong efforts despite not achieving the desired results. Now that I’m here, I’ll work hard to reach the goals the club has set.”

The Danish coach revealed he had received multiple job offers following his stint in the Bundesliga, one of Europe’s top leagues, but was particularly impressed by Al Ahly’s approach.

“It’s normal to receive offers after working in Germany and enjoying success there. But I felt genuine interest from Al Ahly as soon as they contacted me,” he said.

“As discussions progressed, including the club delegation’s visit to Denmark, I felt more and more proud to be joining such a historic institution.” Thorup also recalled playing alongside Egyptian players during his career, including Mahmoud Abou El Dahab and Abdel Sattar Sabry.

“I remember those days fondly, and I hope to reconnect with them,” he said.

He acknowledged the pressure that comes with leading a club followed by more than 70 million fans.

“I understand the expectations that come with coaching Al Ahly.I felt it the moment I arrived at Cairo Airport, where I saw first-hand the passion of the supporters. The intense media coverage since my appointment has also shown me the magnitude of this club. My staff and I are fully committed to succeeding in this mission.”

Thorup concluded by congratulating the Egyptian national team on their qualification for the 2026 World Cup, noting the significant presence of Al Ahly players in the squad as a testament to the club’s quality. While aware of the time constraints, he said he is determined to make an immediate impact.

“I’m used to managing squads with international absences during FIFA windows. I’ve come in a few weeks into the season and we don’t have much time before our trip to Burundi. But I’ll do everything possible to implement my ideas with the players in the coming period.”
