Handball: Al Ahly route Sydney Uni in 2025 IHF Men's Club World Championship opener

Al Ahly’s men’s handball team kicked off their 2025 IHF Men’s Club World Championship campaign with a dominant 41-14 victory over Australia’s Sydney Uni at the New Administrative Capital Arena in Cairo on Friday.

The Red Eagles were in control from the outset, finishing the first half with a commanding 20-6 lead and maintaining their dominance throughout the second period.

Al Ahly's Omar Khaled ‘Castillo’ was named Player of the Match, netting 12 goals with an impressive 86% shooting accuracy.

The Cairo giants are competing reigning champions Veszprem HC and Sydney Uni HC in the same group.

Al Ahly’s next challenge comes on Sunday, 28 September, when they face Veszprem HC in their second group-stage match at 20:00 Cairo local time (GMT+3).

The tournament format sees the top three teams from each group, along with the best-performing runner-up, advancing to the semi-finals.

Last year, Al Ahly made history by becoming the first non-European club to defeat Barcelona, securing a third-place finish with a victory in the playoff.
