Al Ahly’s men’s handball team have advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 IHF Men’s Club World Championship, qualifying as the best-performing runner-up despite a group-stage loss to Hungary’s Veszprem HC.
Under the tournament format, the winners of each group and the best runner-up progress to the semi-finals.
The Egyptian champions will face Group C winners Barcelona in Tuesday’s semi-final, while Veszprem meet three-time world champions SC Magdeburg of Germany earlier in the day.
Al Ahly began their campaign with a commanding 41–14 victory over Australia’s Sydney Uni at the New Administrative Capital Arena in Cairo on Friday.
In their second group match, they fell 31–22 to reigning champions Veszprem.
The Hungarian side led 13–12 at half-time and maintained their advantage throughout the second half.
Al Ahly made headlines at last year’s edition by becoming the first non-European club to defeat Barcelona, eventually securing a third-place finish.
