Thorup aims to build momentum as Al Ahly kick off CAF Champions League title quest

Al Ahly head coach Jess Thorup expressed his appreciation to Burundi and its people for their warm hospitality, noting that this is his first visit to Bujumbura and that he was pleased with the reception.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Al Ahly’s CAF Champions League round of 32 first-leg match against Aigle Noir on Saturday, the Danish coach said he had watched several of the Burundian side’s matches and gathered sufficient information on the team.

“This is not my first time in Africa,” Thorup said. “I previously visited South Africa with FC Augsburg during a training camp, where we played several friendlies. I know a lot about African football and have a good understanding of it, and of Aigle Noir as well.”

Asked about the weather in Burundi, Thorup said: “The weather here is different from Cairo. It rained heavily yesterday, but once the whistle blows tomorrow, the weather doesn’t matter. My only focus is on winning.”

Thorup described the CAF Champions League as a significant competition for both himself and the club.

“This is my first time coaching in the tournament, so I want to start strong with a win and build momentum. Tomorrow’s match is the first half, the second will be played in Cairo.”

He also acknowledged the club’s legacy while emphasising his ambition to add to it.

“Al Ahly has a rich history full of achievements. I respect the past, but I’m here to work for the present and future.”

Al Ahly face Aigle Noir on Saturday at 4 p.m. Cairo time (GMT+3) in the first leg of the CAF Champions League Round of 32.
