Thorup pleased with winning start at Al Ahly

Al Ahly head coach Jess Thorup expressed satisfaction with his first victory in charge of the club, following a 1-0 win over Burundi’s Aigle Noir in the first leg of their CAF Champions League Round of 32 tie on Saturday.

“We played a strong first half, managing to score and create several chances. However, I’m not fully satisfied with our performance in the second half, as we allowed the opponent some space to attack and threaten our goal,” Thorup said in the post-match press conference.

"Modern football doesn’t know the meaning of an ‘easy game.’ I mentioned this yesterday at the pre-match press conference, stressing that we would face a tough challenge against a well-organized team with plenty of motivation," the Danish coach added.

Thorup emphasized that Saturday's match was only the first half of the tie.

"We have the second leg in Cairo, and we will work with the team to ensure we win and secure qualification to the group stage," Thorup said.

He concluded by thanking the people of Burundi for their warm hospitality and excellent reception, adding that he was pleased with the atmosphere and fan presence, which gave the game a special touch.

Thorup also noted that the strong start would serve as a powerful motivator for the team to continue pushing toward their goals in the competition.

The return leg will take place in Cairo on Saturday, 25 October.
