Al Ahly calls on CAF to enforce safety, VAR, and elite referees

Al Ahly SC has sent a formal letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Sunday, following incidents during the second round of group-stage matches in the CAF Champions League, which were detailed in referees' and match officials' reports.

The letter outlines four urgent recommendations aimed at curbing on-field violations, ensuring the safety of all participants, and promoting a positive atmosphere among fans.

The club's proposals, which seek to improve the development and success of African competitions for the benefit of African football, include:

- Implementing comprehensive safety protocols before each match, based on security plans that guarantee a competitive and sporting environment in line with the stature of African football.
- Introducing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in all CAF Champions League matches, the continent’s premier competition, to ensure maximum fairness and consistency across all teams.
- Assigning elite African referees, FIFA-ranked, to all upcoming high-profile and high-attendance fixtures.
- Enforcing CAF regulations rigorously to ensure full compliance by all stakeholders, to ensure a level playing field for all teams.
