Egyptian ambassador welcomes Al Ahly in Burundi ahead of CAF Champions League clash
Egypt’s ambassador to Burundi, Amira Abdel-Rahim, welcomed Al Ahly’s delegation at Bujumbura International Airport on Thursday ahead of the club’s CAF Champions League Round of 32 fixture against Aigle Noir.
Abdel-Rahim, accompanied by staff from the Egyptian embassy, greeted the players and technical staff upon their arrival, offering a warm reception as the Red Eagles touched down following a six-hour flight from Cairo on a private jet.
Al Ahly, who are targeting a record-extending 13th Champions League title, will face Burundi’s Aigle Noir in the first leg of the tie on Saturday at 16:00 Cairo local time (GMT+3).
Under the helm of Danish head coach Jess Thorup, the Egyptian champions wrapped up their preparations in Cairo on Wednesday before departing for Burundi.
The Cairo-based side received a bye in the preliminary round due to their high seeding in the CAF club rankings.
Meanwhile, Aigle Noir reached this stage on away goals after a 1-1 aggregate draw with ASAS Djibouti Telecom, progressing thanks to a goalless draw at home and a 1-1 result away.
