
Ghazl El Mahalla beat Al Ahly in the Egyptian League Cup
Ghazl El Mahalla defeated Al Ahly 2-1 in the third round of the Egyptian League Cup group stage at El Mahalla Stadium on Tuesday.
Al Ahly’s coaching staff, led by Jess Thorup, continued to use the competition to test young players, giving them regular game time in League Cup matches.
The tournament, introduced in the 2021-22 season, is played during international breaks and features clubs from the Egyptian Premier League.
Modern Sport FC won the inaugural edition, while Ceramica Cleopatra have claimed the title in each of the last three editions.
The current edition includes 21 teams divided into three groups, with the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed sides advancing to the quarter-finals.
Al Ahly are in Group A alongside Ceramica Cleopatra, Ghazl El Mahalla, Arab Contractors, Pharco FC and Talae El Geish.
The Cairo side opened their campaign with a 1-0 defeat by Enppi before beating Ceramica Cleopatra last week.
The Egyptian Premier League is currently on hold while the national team compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco from 21 December to 18 January.
